ROYAL ENFIELD HIMALAYAN

POWER: 24.5bhp

WEIGHT: 193- kilos

SEAT HEIGHT: 800mm

FUEL TANK: 15-litres

PRICE NEW: £4200

The Himalayan has been the surprise hit of the small adventure bike market, proving more capable than many could have predicted. A torquey long stroke motor and low seat height makes it the ideal novice adventure machine. Some will love it, some might not. Chance for you to make your own mind up.

KTM 390 ADVENTURE

POWER: 43bhp

WEIGHT: 158 kilos

SEAT HEIGHT: 855mm

FUEL TANK: 14.5-litres

PRICE NEW: £5499

The KTM is the newest bike in the lineup, launched in 2020 after many years of build up. It uses the same single cyclinder 43bhp engine as in the 390 Duke and benefits from having the most power and joint lowest weight alongside the Honda. A real firecracker on the road.

HONDA CRF 250 RALLY

POWER: 24bhp

WEIGHT: 157 kilos

SEAT HEIGHT: 895mm

FUEL TANK: 10.1-litres

PRICE NEW: £5649

The Honda has been a firm favourite for trail riding fans and adventure riders alike for the last few years now. Easy to ride, reliable, long service intervals, it's easy to see why it's been so popular.

NB: The bike has been fitted with a lowering link in the rear suspension meaning that it sits approximately one inch lower than stock.

BMW G 310 GS (Euro 5)

POWER: 34bhp

WEIGHT: 170 kilos

SEAT HEIGHT: 835mm

FUEL TANK: 11.5-litres

PRICE NEW: £5435

The 310 GS takes the look and attitude of its 1200cc big brother and shrinks it down to a more manageable package. Designed to blend road and and off road capabilities, this could be the consummate all rounder and challenge the Himalayan for travel bike of choice. Which will you prefer?

HONDA CB500X
Rally Raid

POWER: 47bhp

WEIGHT: 197 kilos

SEAT HEIGHT: 850mm

FUEL TANK: 17.7-litres

PRICE NEW: £6199 (plus Rally Raid kit)

New for 2021 is this Rally Raid equipped CB500X, complete with 19-inch spoked front wheel and uprated suspension to give added ground clearance. With 47bhp and weighing 197 kilos the CB500X sits at the top end of the A2 category and should serve to give people food for thought about ultimately which one suits them best.

HONDA CRF 300 RALLY

POWER: 26bhp

WEIGHT: 153 kilos

SEAT HEIGHT: 885mm

FUEL TANK: 12.8-litres

PRICE NEW: £6099

The CRF300 Rally is also new for 2021 and offers a chance to ride the latest trail bike from Honda. Changes to the CRF 250 are mainly felt in the engine, with a stronger mid-range and improved gear ratios. Riding the 300 back to back with the 250 is a great way of measuring the change, or realising that you're happy sticking with the old one.

CCM GP450 ADVENTURE

POWER: 40bhp

WEIGHT: 125 kilos (dry)

SEAT HEIGHT: 850mm

FUEL TANK: 20-litres

PRICE NEW: £8500

The CCM GP450 was arguably a bike ahead of its time. Built in Bolton, England, and powered by a BMW derived 450cc single cylinder engine, the CCM was lightweight, but with a big fuel tank and the ergonomics for both off road riding and long distance. In many way it was the unicorn of the adventure bike world, sadly discontinued but here to try for the curious.

At Dorothy’s all we ask is:

  • You treat the bike with the respect that you treat your own

  • You ride within your limits at all times and acknowledge that there is no obligation to keep up with the rider in front.

  • You only attempt terrain that you deem suitable to your ability. There is no obligation to ride anything you don’t want to.

  • You agree to ride responsibly around other riders

  • You agree to remain behind the lead rider at all times

  • You agree to declare any medical condition or history that may be detrimental to your participation

  • You agree that Dorothy’s Speed Shop will remove me from the course if my behaviour is considered dangerous to myself or any other person.

  • You agree that you have sole responsibility for your own actions and personal safety and that you must ride to your own abilities and conditions. You have dynamic control of the bike at all times.

  • You agree that you shall not consume alcohol or drugs before or during the ride.

  • You agree that you have not been convicted of any motoring offence involving drink or drugs in the last 5 years.

  • You accept that motorcycling is an inherently dangerous pursuit and there is of course risk of injury, disablement and death.

  • You accept that there is no personal injury insurance, only the bike is covered, therefore if you are self employed you might want to consider some income protection insurance such as with protectmyincome.com

That might sound ominous but other than a few gentle topples these are a relaxed, gentle paced days designed to showcase the best of the landscape, the bikes and also show that green laning isn't as intimidating as you might have thought.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are new to biking or have had a long break then please consider booking a one on one
