WHAT IS IT?

According to Wikipedia, a pilgrimage is a journey, often into an unknown or foreign place, where a person goes in search of new or expanded meaning about their self, others, nature, or a higher good, through the experience. It can lead to a personal transformation, after which the pilgrim returns to their daily life...

And that is what we're going on here; a pilgrimage across Europe, with the intention to ride some of the best roads of the Alps, Picos and Pyrenees. It'll be a chance to cut loose and ride, as a pack or trail off on your own if you prefer, as we take an arc through Europe having crossed on the overnight ferry from Plymouth to Santander (shared cabin included).

We'll ride between 160 and 200 miles per day, at a speed to enjoy the scenery, so anything above 250cc should do the job. To keep costs reasonable we will do some camping and glamping, and also mix it up with some twin shared rooms in hotels. If you don't wish to camp please let me know and we can look to bolt on an additional rate for all hotels.

At times there will be option to ride some of the unpaved roads in the high mountains, one of which being up to the fortress that featured in the pilot episode of The Speedshop. This will be optional, giving the rider the flexibility to make the trip their own.

HOW IT WORKS

Meet at the ferry terminal in Plymouth in good time to catch the overnight ferry to Santander, with bed in a four bed cabin included. Arriving the next day we'll then begin our adventure, with designated accommodation stops and suggested routes for each day, allowing riders to choose to ride with the pack or head off and do their own thing. The pace will be a general legal road pace. If you're a particularly slow or fast rider then you will be encouraged to self-navigate but usually most riders ride to a similar pace.

You will need a road legal bike, enough tyre wear for 2000 miles, not to mention quality breakdown cover and travel insurance that covers you for cancellation, accident and repatriation. Riders will not be allowed to travel without showing proof of suitable travel insurance. From experience, it's imperative to have.

WHO IS IT FOR?

This tour is for the motorcyclist who wants to ride some of the best roads of Europe in the comfort of a laid back, easy going group who will make for a great adventure. Riders don't need to be overly experienced, but if you haven't been riding long or never ridden in Europe please get in touch before booking to chat things through. The main thing is that at all times you ride to your ability and be realistic of what those abilities are.

The optional unpaved road elements will require riders to be on a suitable machine and have some capability for riding such terrain. It is down to the rider to make the right judgement call on that.

WHO IS IT NOT FOR?

This tour is not for those who want to race off at high speed and do big miles each day. There are more suitable tours for such riders. It is also not for those who are wanting a fully detailed itinerary and a passive approach to travelling. Riders will be expected to make their own decisions, on whether they ride with the group or self navigate. If riders want to spend longer in bed and set off later in the morning, no problem. Just make your own way to where we're going. Often we won't know where we're going to stop for lunch or coffees along the way, but that's all part of this kind of journey. Some of it will be unknown and riders will need to arrive with an appropriate sense of flexibility.
